Sakshat: The $35 Tablet

Sakshat is the result of Indian Government's aim to bridge the Digital divide among Indian students. The project is being developed by the collaboration of Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and four IITs. The tablet is about to break its ground in India by the end of this month (report by Technorati) after a considerable number of roadblocks. It will be subsidized and sold to the students of the country across the institutes and is not available for retail sale.

Coming into the details, The tablet is manufactured by HCL and is priced at $50(INR 2200) slightly higher than what is expected but that will be 50% subsidized by the government and sold at a price of 1100 INR. The first batch of 10,000 tablets is being dispatched to IIT Rajasthan in late june.

The Specs of the Gadget are as follows:
  • Software: Android Honeycomb (although not sure)
  • Memory: 32 GB
  • RAM: 2GB
  • 7-inch Touch screen and an in-built key-board (expect a resistive touch considering the cost of the gadget)
  • USB-port support, Wi-fi, Video-conferencing supported by a front-faced camera (resolution unknown)
