Facebook launches ‘Gmail Killer’ email service

Facebook launches new email service

Facebook is all set to launch ‘Gmail Killer’ email service on 15 November 2010,6pm UK time. according to a leading silicon valley blog,TechCrunch, founder and co-editor, Michael Arrington, the company has already sent out invitations for a special invite-only event to be held on November 15 at St. Regis Yerba Buena Terrace in San Fransisco, US.

New web-based email client codenamed Project Titan is supposed to be Facebook reversal to what Google did to it by updating its API Terms of Service that allowed easy export as well as import of Contacts to a service or application only if the same is reciprocated. In a way, Google shut down Facebook’s access to pull contacts from Gmail to protect the user data. In return, Facebook came up with a work around to download Gmail contacts as CSV files and then upload it to Facebook. It’s not for the first time that we have seen these two giants fight with each other the same has been in the past too.

The new email service if launched will allow users to have a @facebook.com email address. The service would be invitation based one, i.e. only those would be allowed who have an invitation to join it. the service is believed to be launched at 6 pm UK time.

However,it would be quite interesting to see how Facebook which already has over 500 million users online will combat with Google offering of Gmail which already has many great services under its hood.
